Krishna is held to have been born at midnight under Rohini nakshatra, and observance follows that: the fast runs through the day and breaks at midnight, when the birth is marked. Where Ashtami tithi and Rohini do not align on the same night, regional traditions differ on which to follow — one reason the date is sometimes observed on two consecutive days.
